Melissa’s Tips on How to Start a Podcast

You can start a podcast for less than $100 upfront and $20 per month.

Here is what I used to get my podcasts created and out to the world.  The information is FREE but it will take some of your time.

The most important thing is to just start.  Start somewhere, you’ll figure it out as you go along if you are looking for the answers.

It’s not going to be perfect so don’t even waste time worrying about that. 🙂

Don’t copy what someone else has already done.  Be YOU!  That’s what the world wants.  Be different, different is better than better anyway.

Disclaimer: I have linked to my affiliate links where I can.  If you click from this page and purchase I will be paid a small percentage however it will NOT cost you any more to purchase that way.

Equipment I use for Podcasting

mic for podcasting

Melissa’s Podcast Mic

Mic: Audio-Technica ATR2100-USB

This was the biggest investment when I first started.  Today you can pick this up on Amazon for less than $55 (used for less than $40).

Mic Windscreen: On Stage Foam Ball-Type Mic Windscreen

As of today, it’s less than $3 on Amazon.

Software I use for Podcasting

Audacity: It’s FREE and really easy to use.  You can go to Youtube and search how to edit in audacity and get really great information.

I also use Garage Band for some of my voice recordings because I like the way it sounds.  (If you don’t have a Mac, don’t worry about Garage Band.  I find it to be more complex than Audacity.)

Skype: If you are going to be doing interviews, you’ll want a skype account.

I also have a Skype phone number.  That way if the person I’m interviewing is not able to jump on Skype, they can just call my Skype # from their phone.

eCamm Call Recorder for Skype – if you are on Mac.*Free version to try.  $29.95 for the paid version.

Pamela for Skype – if you are on PC.  *Free if you record 15 min or less of audio (5 min or less of video).  The next level up is 14.95 EU for unlimited recordings.

Website & Podcast Hosting

Website Host:
You’ll want a website and domain that you own.

Bluehost is a good website host to start with.  They have a program where they will give you a FREE Domain, 1 click WordPress Install, and Free Site Builders to help you get started.  That’s currently $7.99 / month.

*I do not use Bluehost because my husband and I have our own dedicated server that we host on.  That’s a lot more expensive and hopefully you’ll grow to that point very quickly!  In the meantime, start with Bluehost while you are building your audience.

Podcast Host:
You’ll need to host your podcast on a different server than where you host your website.  I LOVE Libsyn! They have plans starting at $5 per month.

How To Podcast Videos

Pat Flynn is by far my favorite mentor!  I followed his 5 Podcasting Tutorials to learn about podcasting.

I also picked up a few tips from John Lee Dumas and his Free Podcast Course.  As well as Steve over at My Wife Quit Her Job.

Podcast Music & Intros

I love Music Radio Creative for upbeat podcasts…my podcasts don’t really fit with their style though.

I use Pond5 and iStock Audio.  There are places to get free audio you can use, just be careful that you are not infringing on anyone’s copyright.  Make sure it’s okay with them if you use their work.

Fiverr and Upwork are great places to find people who will do voice-overs, or really any of the podcast creation that you do not want to do…except for maybe doing the actual recordings.  I recommend doing it yourself at first though.  That way you know 1) what needs to be done, 2) how to do it, and 3) you’ll appreciate them.  If you hire someone, you still need to let them know what you need to have done for you.

I’m working on a downloadable checklist.  Please reach out to me with any questions you might have!  I’m happy to help.
